I wouldn’t know how any anime fan could go without knowing what Attack on Titan is. An instantaneous cross country hit isn’t easy to create and certainly cannot be duplicated like many other anime genres. With this in mind, (and the other compilation films made including a live-action adaptation), there’s really no surprise that a compilation film comprised of season 2 was announced for a limited release in the U.S. However, not only did moviegoers get to experience the drama, action, blood, and murderous carnage all over again, we also received an early screening of the first episode of Season 3.
The new season takes place not long after where we were left off last year. Eren and Krista (Historia), are wanted by humans and Titans alike but hide beyond Wall Maria with few others. The characters witness Eren undergoing a secret experiment that may give more clues as to whether he truly can control Titans. It’s not long before they are found and a kidnapping attempt is made but Captain Levi senses something is off.
Episode #38 is one of the best premieres of the Summer 2018 anime lineup. Packed with more conspiracies and deadly double crossings that hint Season Three may be much more on a human vs humans level. This theme is explored often in supernatural/fantasy stories but not too much in Attack on Titan. Sure, Eren faced death by the hands of humans who were scared of his Titan shape-shifting. And yeah, Mikasa’s backstory is tragic as hell and humans torture Titans occasionally but not much like a new antagonist and his team shooting other human’s heads clean off.
Attack on Titan really keeps the story fresh, hilarious, bloody and engaging in Episode 1 of Season 3. I’ll be watching the worldwide debut on July 22nd just so I can experience it all over again with a different lense. Now more than ever, I am interested in reading the manga series to see what happens next.
